VPN encryption: what is actually protected
How encryption keys, secure channels and client configuration affect network safety.
How encryption keys, secure channels and client configuration affect network safety.
How it works
Encryption transforms data so that reading it without the required key becomes harder. Modern protocols also include key agreement and integrity checks to protect data while in transit.
A protected VPN channel does not eliminate the need for HTTPS and cannot protect a device already compromised by malware. Correct settings and trustworthy client software still matter.
What to keep in mind
Personal subscription URLs and QR codes can contain access credentials. Do not share them in public messages, screenshots or application logs.
